Greg Dobbs points out that sometimes it is reasonable to change our federal Constitution.
The most worthwhile and important such change would be a strong balanced budget amendment. Federal debt held by the public more than quadrupled under President Reagan and the first President Bush, then more than doubled under President Obama. Neither Republicans nor Democrats can be trusted to restrain federal spending without constitutional restraint.
If we had passed such an amendment in the early 1980s, when there was a strong national movement for it, the federal debt would be one-tenth of what it is today. Instead, growing debt as the baby-boomer generation retires is a clear and present danger to our future stability and prosperity.
