SEATTLE — The Seattle Sounders have signed homegrown player Jordan Morris.
The U.S. international striker opted to leave Stanford after his junior season to sign with the MLS club.
“It’s good to be home,” Morris posted in a tweet Thursday, wearing the Sounders’ rave green uniform.
Sounders announced a significant club event for Thursday, but did not reveal the subject of the announcement. Morris’ MLS rights are owned by Seattle as a homegrown player and he played for the Sounders’ academy.
Earlier this week, Morris turned down an offer to play for Werder Bremen in Germany. The German club announced Morris’ decision, saying he saw his future in America.
Morris made his national team debut in 2014 and scored in 2015 in an exhibition against Mexico. The 21-year-old junior forward had a pair of goals to lead Stanford over Clemson 4-0 for its first NCAA men’s soccer title in December and he won the Hermann Trophy as the top college player. He skipped his senior season at Stanford to turn pro.
His father, Dr. Michael Morris, is medical director for the Sounders.
