White Labs, which is one of the world’s largest makers of yeast, is opening a tasting room in Boulder.

White Labs plans to open Friday in Boulder, a new must-visit experience for homebrewers and craft beer fans alike.

The Boulder location — above Upslope Brewing — is open Fridays from 2 to 8 p.m. to start. White Labs is planning a grand opening party March 4.

The San Diego-based company produces the yeasts the brew many Colorado professional and homebrewed beers — meaning it’s well-known inside the community. But Kat Small, the company’s special projects manager, said the tasting room hopes to educate even the casual craft beer fan.

“A lot of people know even know that yeast is a strong component in beer,” she said.

To demonstrate the difference, White Labs brewed an Extra Special Bitter ale and split it into three batches, each with a different yeast strain. The company did the same with a wheat beer, fermenting on three different yeasts. The six samples will showcase the difference yeast can make in a beer.

And as a special treat, White Labs will offer samples of its — a beer made with 96 different yeast strains.

All the beer is made in San Diego and shipped to Boulder. The tasting room — the company’s longtime area sales office — is located at 1898 S. Flatiron Court in suite 210. In addition, White Labs will sell growlers to-go and sell homebrew vials of yeast.
