Re: “Howelsen Hill slip, sliding away,” Jan. 17 sports story.
I read with interest the story about Howelsen Hill, but I take exception to the part of the story that said “Steamboat, Park City [Utah] and Lake Placid, N.Y., are the only places in the U.S. that have full-sized ski jumps.”
Pine Mountain ski jump in Iron Mountain, Mich., holds the U.S. records for the longest jump in World Cup competition at 459 feet. In the past, Howelsen and Pine Mountain ski jumps were rivals in competing for the U.S. ski-jumping record. Holding the record was keenly important to both cities. The rivalry faded away when Pine Mountain regularly posted jumps of over 400 feet — a distance Howelsen has not ever matched.
This slight is probably only important to ski-jumping fans — which I am, having grown up in Iron Mountain.
