Jefferson County authorities said Monday they recovered a vehicle linked to a Sunday that left one of two alleged suspects dead.
The county sheriff’s office found the abandoned gold Ford Mustang overnight Sunday in Federal Heights. Investigators say it was stolen from Lakewood.
The Mustang was linked to the attempted robbery on the 5400 block o f South Taft Court where authorities say the two suspects — both men — came to a home responding to a Craigslist advertisement for items the homeowner was selling.
Investigators described the things for sale as collectibles and “household” items.
At some point during an interaction over the items, the two men produced a handgun, and restrained the owner, said Jacki Kelley a sheriff’s office spokeswoman.
The suspects robbed the homeowner and left his house.
The homeowner was able to free himself, retrieve his gun and confronted the thieves outside his home.
One of the suspects was in the victim’s vehicle and was in the process of stealing it. The other suspect was in a ’90s gold, Ford Mustang.
The homeowner fired several shots, fatally wounding one of the men who was pronounced dead at St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood.
The slain suspect’s name has not been released. The second man remains on the lam.
