Friends and family of a man killed last week near a Montbello business plaza continue burning candles and writing messages on the sidewalk as Denver police search for a person of interest in the fatal shooting.

Police have a photo of a man they believe to be connected with the shooting that left dead on the sidewalk near a bus park-and-ride station near Peoria Street and East Albrook Drive, according to a Denver Crime Stoppers bulletin.

The shooting happened around 5:40 p.m. Jan. 23 after an altercation between two groups broke out on the south end of a nearby shopping center and moved north toward an RTD park-n-Ride, police have said.

On Friday, Cmdr. Ron Thomas held his District 5 evening shift roll call at the bus plaza to show the community that officers are concerned about the shooting and other crime.

As the police left to begin their nightly patrols, community members waiting for the bus wrote chalk messages for Jenkins on the sidewalk.

“Kings live forever,” one young woman wrote.

Marian Holloway, who said she was a family friend, was lighting candles on the corner where Jenkins’ blood stain remains visible.

“Senseless!” Holloway said of the killing.

The shooting happened after a dispute at a liquor store, she said. The other man shot Jenkins as he was walking toward his apartment complex.

Jenkins died from multiple gunshot wounds, according to the Denver coroner’s office.

Jenkins was the father of a 2-month-old girl and was a hard worker, Holloway said. She teared up as she described Jenkins’s long, curly eyelashes and dimples.

“He had that ‘anything-you-need’ look,” Holloway said.

She said she and others in the community recognize the suspect, but they don’t know where he is.

“You better hope the police get you before the streets do,” she said to the shooter.

Anyone with information about the person of interest’s identity or whereabouts is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867.
