Lockheed Martin Space Systems’ Commercial Space division in Littleton has been tapped to build the latest satellite for a Japanese satellite and broadcasting company.
awarded Bethesda, Md.- based Lockheed Martin the contract for JCSAT-17. Sky Perfect’s fleet of satellites focuses on applications such as TV broadcasting, resources exploration and disaster monitoring.
Financial terms of the contract and the planned use of the JCSAT-17 were not immediately disclosed.
The JCSAT-17, built from the A2100 design, will include a flexible processor to allow Sky Perfect to adjust the satellite’s position to focus on an area of high need, said Jill Krugman, a Lockheed spokeswoman.
The , where 150 people work, will develop the JCSAT-17. Lockheed plans to hire at least 25 more employees to support the project, Krugman said.
JCSAT-17 will be the eighth satellite Lockheed has built for Sky Perfect. Targeted for launch in 2019, the satellite is expected to have a life span of more than 15 years.
