American Red Cross

It’s a scary world out there, and sometimes it would be nice to feel a little more equipped to handle it. Enter the first-aid app from the American Red Cross, which gives users a guide to simple first aid for a variety of conditions, including broken bones and hypothermia. Illustrations, diagrams and clear instructions provide tips that should at least keep users from making matters worse before they can reach a professional.

This is a basic first-aid app that is no substitute for proper training. It can provide advice for minor treatments at home, however, and gives users a nice base of knowledge to draw from just in case — especially during these icy and slippery days. Free, for iOS and Android.

Feast

Looking for some cooking inspiration? Feast gives you a variety of recipes to drool over and attempt. Famous names such as Jacques Pepin are featured in this simple app, providing recipes that add some flavor to your usual repertoire. Users can search for ideas by chef, course and ingredient.

The app is free, but with certain limitations. You will need to create an account to use some features, including a shopping-list tool. Not all of the recipes are free, but you have the option to unlock some of the premium recipes for a week. For the fullest experience, there is a paid tier that starts at $9 a month for unlimited access. Free, for iOS.
