Aurora big-school boys basketball, having a banner season to date, will be at least one local team stronger in the 2016-17 season.

Vista PEAK Prep is set to move up to a Class 5A league from 4A, coach Gary Childress said. The Bison, who will still be 4A for at least the next two years, will be joining the 10-team East Metro Athletic Conference, which contains other city teams such as Aurora Central, Gateway, Hinkley and Rangeview, and is exactly what Vista PEAK has in mind.

“We don’t have a rival,” Childress said of his groupm that currently competes in the 4A Colorado 7 (even though it has eight teams), also comprised of Alameda, Elizabeth, Englewood, Fort Lupton, Fort Morgan, Skyview and Weld Central. “It will really help our crowds and create rivalries.”

As of Tuesday, Vista PEAK Prep, which was 14-5 overall, 9-1 in league and a half-game behind Fort Morgan in the Colorado 7.
