A Colorado State Patrol trooper and Parks and Wildlife officer took an injured owl under their wing Sunday.
A great horned owl just east of Alamosa suffered a severely broken leg and wing after officials said the animal was likely hit by a car.
“It’s not unusual for animals to be scavenging along roads where there are dead animals or animals running around,” said Colorado Parks and Wildlife spokesman Joe Lewandowski.
A Tuesday morning tweet from State Patrol showed the owl wrapped in a blanket.
“We even help injured owls,” the tweet read. “Speedy recovery feathered friend.”
State Patrol turned over the 3-pound animal to Parks and Wildlife officers who took X-rays of the critter and are trying to get it to a vet.
“It’s not doing great,” Lewandowski said. “We’re not sure if this bird is going to make it.”
