Look at results through the quarterfinals of the Colorado tournament through Friday afternoon at the Pepsi Center. Twenty-four of the 287 returning champions moved on to Friday Night’s semifinals. Two Pomona competitors went down as down another at Limon.
At Class 5A 120 pounds, two-time champion Tomas Gutierrez of the Panthers went down to junior Hunter Matney in a 5-2 decision. The Panthers’ Dayton Marvel (132) was decisioned 4-2 by Riley Garner-Orr of Central (G.J.) 4-2.
And at 2A heavyweight, Limon’s Jayden Hilferty lost a 7-3 decision to Mario Madaleno of Cedaredge.
Otherwise, the following two dozen others moved on to the semifinals and further underlined the fact that wrestling features few upsets:
