Speaking to reporters about Donald Trump last Thursday, Pope Francis said due to Trump s stance on immigration he is not a Christian. Trump later responded, if and when the Vatican is attacked by ISIS the Pope would have only wished and prayed that he would have been President. (Getty Images photos)
Re: Pope vs. Trump: “Not Christian” to only build border walls, Feb. 19 news story.
Pope Francis criticized Donald Trump for his campaign to build a wall to keep illegal immigrants from coming to this country, saying anyone talking about building walls and not bridges is not a Christian.
Though I m not a Catholic, I agree with the pope. Trump is no more a Christian than my cat. Trump is all about branding, and he has branded himself a Christian in order to win the evangelical vote. He has demonstrated a total lack of charity, grace, humility and generosity and he has shown a foreboding willingness to lie to get what he wants. For him to now openly criticize the pontiff speaks volumes about his own character, which should become a watchword for this election for anyone considering voting for this man.

This letter was published in the Feb. 23 edition. When the pope is willing to open Vatican City, which is defined as an independent country, to unlimited immigration, then he will have a right to criticize Donald Trump for trying to stem the flow of illegal immigrants into the United States. Until that time, the pope should confine himself to church doctrine rather than injecting himself into the U.S. presidential election.
John Dellinger, Aurora
Now that the pope has opined about Donald Trump, igniting a chorus of Keep your nose out of our business, it s clear that it was a mistake to invite him to address Congress. We must have given him the impression that we care about what he thinks.
