7.7% = Tax for Aurora resident. Tax test experiment courtesy of reader Nathan Worsham (Thanks!)

Noted: Online retailer Amazon filed for a sales-tax license in Aurora on Feb. 8, making it the second Colorado city (we have confirmed) collecting sales tax from Amazon.

Amazon began collecting . Reader and Aurora resident Nathan Worsham shared the tax charged on an Amazon purchase. It comes .

But the tax rate varies from city to city. Amazon won’t share how it tallies up the fee but in our search to find out what’s happening, we’ve heard from Aurora city officials.

And, of course, not everything is straightforward — even for the city.

In Aurora, consumers who buy goods at a local store can pay up to 8 percent in sales tax.

The city collects the usual 2.9 percent in state sales tax, plus the metro Regional Transportation District and  taxes that equal 1.1 percent. Aurora’s city tax is 3.75 percent, which is a smidgen higher than Denver’s 3.65 percent.

But in Aurora, county taxes may differ depending where you live.

“The city of Aurora sits in three different counties, Adams, Arapahoe and Douglas; therefore its citizens pay different sales tax depending where they buy. For an internet purchase, we understand that sales tax is calculated based on the ZIP code in which the shopper lives,” shared Abraham Morales, Aurora’s senior public information officer.

Amazon’s sales-tax license from Aurora went live on Feb. 8, 2016.

Morales said that a typical purchase in the Arapahoe County part of Aurora, charges 8.0 percent sales tax. Worsham’s 7.7 percent rate appears to not include county taxes. And that’s the case for residents of other Colorado cities seeing sales tax charges on Amazon purchases. It appears that Amazon is not collecting county taxes in Colorado.
