A professor at Western State University in Gunnison was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of Internet luring and sexual exploitation of a child, officials said.

Daniel Miles Cress, 53, was contacted online by the First Judicial District Attorney Child Sex Offender Internet Investigations Unit, according to a district attorney news release. The investigator was portraying himself online as a girl under the age of 15.

Cress allegedly responded with sexually graphic texts, chats, telephone conversations and web cam communications, the release said.

Cress allegedly repeatedly asked the person he believed to be a young teen to perform sexual acts and “sneak out” with him, investigators said.

Investigators arrested Cress at his home in Gunnison early Wednesday morning. He faces charges of Internet luring of a child and three counts of Internet sexual exploitation of a child.

Cress is being taken to Jefferson County and is being held on $20,000 bond. If he does not post bond, his first court appearance will be March 3 at 10 a.m. in the Jefferson County Courthouse.

Western State Colorado University did not immediately respond to requests seeking comment.
