CHAPEL HILL, N.c. — Connor Cannizzaro scored the winning goal in overtime to lift the top-ranked and defending national champion Denver lacrosse team to a 13-12 victory over No. 9 North Carolina.
The victory was the fifth straight to start the season for the Pioneers, who needed a late tying goal from Zach Miller to force overtime.
“I thought that we were playing as well as we possibly could have in the third (quarter) and in the beginning of the fourth,” DU coach Bill Tierney said. “It was an exciting game, all that the fans could ask for. We’re going to learn a lot as a team from this game, that’s for sure.”
Miller finished with four goals — one short of a career high — and Jack Bobzien and Cannizzaro had three goals apiece.
Miller scored the tying goal with only 9.8 seconds left, burying his shot after a nifty behind-the-cage feed from freshman Austin French.
Trevor Baptiste won his 21st face off of the game to begin the overtime period. After a timeout, Bobzien found Cannizzaro for the winning goal, giving the Pioneers their 18th consecutive victory dating to last season.
