A cyclist riding Lookout Moutain Rd. near the Activation Ministry Center in Golden, March 2012. (Hyoung Chang, The Denver Post)
Last weekend I decided to visit Buffalo Bill s grave and museum on top of Lookout Mountain. As I drove up the road from Golden, I passed groups of bikers heading up and down the mountain. The road is only two lanes, and in many places there are no shoulders, so the bikers and motorists are sharing the same territory. Bikes and cars are only going to share the same space under very mutually safe conditions. The bikers I saw were not very watchful. In some places they strayed out as far as the center line. In other places I saw bikers heading down at speeds that were pretty obviously beyond their control.
I am 83 and have ridden bikes since I was a kid and have some knowledge about what works. The present system isn t working, and ignoring the situation only ensures that people will be killed.
I asked the ticket taker at the Buffalo Bill museum if anything had been done to create a saner situation. She said, Not to my knowledge. Well, somebody has got to be in charge of creating a safer environment.
