DURANGO, Colo. (AP) — Budget issues have caused a Colorado city to delay work on two dangerous rapids at a whitewater park.

The Durango Herald reports (http://bit.ly/1R5rM5h ) that the improvements at Durango Whitewater park have been put off until after high-flow season.

Parks and Recreation Director Cathy Metz says the department was hoping to widen the Corner Pocket and Ponderosa rapids this winter, before the park’s second season, but it didn’t work out.

Some rafting companies say the rapids are known for flipping rafters and kayakers and should be fixed immediately.

Mild to Wild Rafting owner Alex Mickel says guides can carry the boat over land to bypass the dangerous rapids. But Mickel that’s not always possible with large groups because of treacherous terrain.
