Denver will host the U.S. Department of Energy’s biennial Solar Decathlon competition in 2017, the city announced Friday morning.

Sixteen selected collegiate teams from across the country and the world will descend on the Mile High City will participate in the competition after spending almost two years designing and building energy-efficient houses that are powered by the sun

Energetics, an energy and environmental consulting firm, has been chosen as the program administrator for the competition.

The winner of the competition will be the team that best blends affordability, consumer appeal and design excellence with optimal energy production and maximum efficiency, the city said in a news release.

Officials say RTD, VISIT Denver, Denver’s Visitor Bureau, Denver’s Office of Sustainability, Denver International Airport, Panasonic and Xcel Energy are among those who played a role in helping to secure Denver as the competition’s host.
