Two people escaped with minor injuries after the SUV they were in was mashed into an unrecognizable heap of metal after a collision with a Union Pacific freight train early Friday morning.
The names of the people in the vehicle have not been released.
The collision happened on train tracks on Weld County Road 18, Fort Lupton Police Chief Ken Poncelow said Friday morning.
“You couldn’t even tell it was an SUV after the crash,” Poncelow said.
The big red train, which was carrying empty freight cars, struck the left front end of a Ford Cherokee at around 6 a.m., he said.
Poncelow said it was snowing at the time of the crash.
“I don’t know why they didn’t hear the train whistle,” he said.
