A man arrested in Florida for a Denver murder has been given a life sentence in the case.

Daniel J. Gonzales, 32, was sentenced Friday after being found guilty of first-degree murder, abuse of a corpse and arson, among other charges, according to the Denver District Attorney’s Office.

On Feb. 4, 2015, the body of the 66-year-old victim, Francis Canham, was found in a home in the 2600 block of Java Court.

Along with the body, investigators found a can of gasoline, matches and what appeared to be attempts to start a fire in the home. The victim’s identification and credit cards had been stolen.

Denver police detectives, with assistance from an economic crime investigator with the Denver DA’s Office, quickly identified Daniel Gonzales as a suspect. He was , Fla., within a week of the discovery of the body. Gonzales was also found guilty of stalking, burglary and aggravated robbery. His life sentence includes an additional 48-year prison term.
