President Obama on Wednesday commuted a 58-year-old Aurora man’s 20-year federal prison sentence on drug charges.
Sammy Lee Woods was sentenced in 2004 for conspiracy to distribute and possession with intent to distribute 50 or more grams of cocaine base. He was also convicted of other cocaine-related charges.
Woods, who federal records show was set to be freed in 2018, will now be released on July 28.
He was convicted in federal court in Colorado. Bureau of Prisons records show Woods is being held at the Federal Corrections Institution in Memphis.
BOP says the Tennessee facility is a medium-security prison with an adjacent minimum security satellite camp.
Obama, who has , especially for nonviolent drug offenders, on Wednesday, according to the White House.
In July, he said the issue was one America couldn’t afford to ignore, according to The Associated Press.
