With the arrival of warmer weather and numerous spring events, the Colorado Department of Transportation, the Colorado State Patrol and local law enforcement agencies have launched heightened enforcement to prevent impaired driving.

crackdown began last weekend and runs through May 15 — one of a dozen periods throughout the year in which authorities set up sobriety checkpoints, saturation patrols and other measures to discourage people from driving impaired.

Last year, the campaign arrested 1,870 impaired drivers statewide, marking two straight years of increased numbers.

More than 150 people die each year in Colorado in alcohol-related traffic crashes — about one-third of all vehicle fatalities.

CDOT also uses federal money to do community outreach to reinforce the safe driving message.

At Coors Field, DUI awareness posters will be posted in restrooms and public service announcements in both English and Spanish featuring Rockies players will air on the Jumbotron before games.
