A 250-pound, 15-foot long land shark is being auctioned off with the proceeds to benefit Colorado State University’s effort to create a better beer.

The shark has hung over Colorado’s tallest bar at the C.B. & Potts at CSU’s Campus West location for the past 20 years. But the restaurant is moving to the Foothills Mall and the shark is not making the trip.

So the Potts shark — which wears a No. 22 CSU jersey — is the focus of an online auction, which kicked off Saturday and continues through April 30.

Bidding for the shark started at $1,000 and the winner may be eligible for a tax deduction, if the bid is more than the fair market value of $5,000. As of Monday morning, the bid was $1,250.

The proceeds of the auction will benefit CSU’s Fermentation Science and Technology program.

“Since we opened in 1974, we have enjoyed our relationship with CSU,” said Dave Iverson, chief operating officer for C.B. & Potts. “We began brewing 20 years ago in Fort Collins, and since the inception of the Fermentation Science and Technology program, it has been our pleasure to be involved with the development of CSU students pursuing careers in the craft beer industry.”

“The Potts Shark,” Iverson added, “is iconic in the community, and we are happy to be partnering with this special fund-raising initiative.”

The new owner will be responsible for removing and shipping costs, says CSU. For more information or to place a bid, visit
