A driver arrested over the weekend in Weld County for racing, was also charged with child abuse after deputies found two small children in the car.

A 5-year-old was unrestrained and a 7-month-old infant was in a forward-facing car seat.

According to the news release from the Weld County Sheriff’s office, deputies first were notified of two vehicles drag racing on Interstate 25 near Erie.

Deputies saw a 2015 red Ford Mustang and another vehicle that appeared to be a Kia Soul “engaged in what appeared to be a speed contest” heading north on Interstate 25.

The cars registered speeds higher than 120 miles per hour. When the deputy made contact with the Ford Mustang it was traveling at speeds of more than 100 mph.

There were four passengers in the Mustang, according to the news release, including the two small children.

The driver, 26-year-old Jarrod Andrews, was arrested and charged with two counts of child abuse, four counts of reckless endangerment and multiple traffic violations.

The deputy was not able to pull over the second vehicle involved, and no further description is available.

The department reminds drivers that all children under 1 or who weigh less than 20 pounds must be in a rear-facing child restraint system in the back of the vehicle. All children under the age of 8 must be in a proper child restraint system.

Andrews has posted bond. He is scheduled to be appear in court next month.
