Interview with Kynsi Saye, owner

Q: How did you get involved in this business?

A: I graduated from Colorado State University with a degree in apparel merchandising and have worked at various retail boutiques and apparel companies. From there, I decided to take everything I had learned, my love for living an active lifestyle and my interest in streetwear and activewear to make my vision come to life.

Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?

A: It is an online business, so it is open 24/7. I will fulfill orders as soon as they are processed as opposed to owning a storefront with set hours. I have created an in-house showroom so customers are welcome to schedule a time to come to my house to look at the clothes and try them on before they purchase them. Kompass Apparel provides high-quality apparel that can be dressed up or dressed down while combining the style of streetwear with the functionality of active wear. The movement and lifestyle behind the brand makes it unique.

Q: What do you like best about your line of work?

A: I love photography and I take most of the pictures shown on my website and social media, so that is probably my favorite part. I also love meeting so many creative people: fashion bloggers, models, photographers, screen printers and other artists in the Denver fashion scene. Aesthetics are important to me, so I really enjoy making “look-books” and styling my clothing line for photo shoots. It is amazing how good you can make a basic T-shirt look with the right styling.

Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?

A: My biggest challenge is getting my name out there. There are so many great clothing brands, so maintaining brand loyalty with all my customers is extremely important. Keeping up with fashion trends, color trends and the quick turnover rate in the industry is challenging. It is also terrifying to make all the big decisions myself. If something doesn’t work out, then the blame is 100 percent on me. But when something does work out, it makes all the challenges worth it.

Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:

A: Many people don’t know that I run Kompass Apparel completely on my own. I have learned how to do the accounting and tax work, fulfill orders and work with manufacturing to create the best possible product for my customers. I do all of this while maintaining a professional image for my company. It is much more than posting on Instagram or going to fashion events.
