Re: Kasich racks up another humiliating loss, April 8 Jennifer Rubin column.

John Kasich is not the first choice of a majority of Republicans. But neither was Abraham Lincoln. At the brokered 1860 convention, the leading candidates alienated so many that nobody could secure the required majority on the first ballot. Good-naturedly, Lincoln asked everyone that if he was not their first choice, let him be their second. And when everyone s first choices could not overcome the animosity they created, the Republicans nominated the consensus second (and best) choice.

Donald Trump and Ted Cruz s paranoid efforts to push Kasich from the race demonstrate that they know they cannot win a first-ballot nomination, as well as their fear that Kasich will eventually prevail. Polls consistently show only Kasich can defeat Hillary Clinton due to the polarizing anger other candidates generate. When not considering party, demography or class, Americans innately understand: Kasich is not only the GOP s best general-election candidate, he would be the best president.
