Deerhunter historically has enjoyed an antagonistic relationship with its crowds. Singer-songwriter Brandon Cox has taken his punk philosophy very seriously, and his bands often display the gleeful antagonism of late-night toilet paper vandals. Once, with side-project Atlas Sound, that contrarian streak manifested itself in a one-hour cover of The Knack’s “My Sharona.” Cox has relented since those days. “Fading Frontier,” Deerhunter’s latest, is his most accessible album to date, even as it hurdles its listeners through some ego-shattering existential problems. Catch the band at the Gothic Theatre on April 25. Tickets: $20 via .
Like any costumed Japanese punk band worth its salt, Peelander Z has an amazing backstory. The band was formed on Planet Peelander, and its primary objective on Earth is pretty straightforward: to have fun. It carries this out via outrageous costumes (each is color-categorized according to its Peelander code name) and an uproarious-yet-reverent take on speed metal. Expect props, crowd-stage invasions, tiger suits, bowling pins and the sort of deliriously weird music experience that only Japan can provide. Catch the comic book rockers when they come through the Marquis Theatre on April 24. Tickets are $12-$14 via .-Dylan Owens
