The Weld County Commissioners are chipping in $2 million to help pay for an additional lane on Interstate 25 between Highway 402 in Johnstown to Highway 14 in Fort Collins.

The money, which will be put with commitments from other northern Colorado cities, will fund a local match in order to get federal funding for an I-25 expansion.

The Colorado Department of Transportation and the North Front Range Metropolitan Planning Organization are each applying for the federal funds.

Planners hope to build an additional 14-mile managed lane from Johnstown to Fort Collins. They also want to replace the Poudre River bridge to accommodate the Poudre River Trail and the Union Pacific Bridge south of Crossroads.

“Improving north I-25 is vital for the economic success of northern Colorado,” said Weld Commission Chair Mike Freeman. “The funds we are dedicating to improvements on this interstate are an investment in our economic success as a county and a region.”
