Colorado State Representative Daniel Kagan, D-Denver, speaks during a debate period on an amended bill prohibiting the sale of larger-capacity ammunition magazines statewide, inside the Colorado State Legislature, in Denver, March 13, 2013. (Brennan Linsley, The Denver Post)
Last week three gun bills were defeated in the Colorado legislature. One of the bills would have repealed the ban on high-capacity ammunition magazines.
On April 23, an 18-year-old in Wisconsin opened fire outside a high school prom, wounding two students, before a police officer who was in the parking lot fatally shot him. According to the school district, the shooter approached the school with a high-powered rifle and large ammunition clip. The district said the quick actions taken by police and district staff to secure the building prevented what otherwise might have been a disaster of unimaginable proportions.
I think the above situation shows why Coloradans supported a bill to ban high-capacity magazines. It also demonstrates why it would have been wrong to repeal the ban and the possible consequences of doing so.
