House Speaker Paul Ryan joins Wisconsin state Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, left, and Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., center, at a campaign rally for Johnson on Thursday in Burlington, Wis. (Scott Bauer, The Associated Press)

Re: Ryan declines to back Trump, waits to see unification moves, May 6 news story.

Regardless of what you think of Donald Trump, he seems to have won the Republican primary within the rules that we were told had to be followed at all costs. Now Paul Ryan is saying he cannot support Trump yet, despite the fact the people have spoken and the rules have been followed. Speaker Ryan could have endorsed the Republican nominee chosen by the people without abandoning his principles and worked with Trump behind closed doors. I believe his public rejection of Trump will set a horrible precedent for the speaker of the House, the GOP, and will end up helping Trump by enraging many people who are shocked once again at the so-called political elite saying they know more than the voters do.
