Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump gives a thumbs up after giving a foreign policy speech at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, April 27. ( Evan Vucci, The Associated Press)
Re: Trump lays out his foreign policy vision, April 28 news story.
Donald Trump s foreign policy address provided no comfort to anyone hoping that he might reveal some knowledge of the world outside his penthouse suite. His strategy is based almost exclusively on his ability to make deals. It s one thing to intimidate competitors in casino and luxury hotel development, periodically employing bankruptcy and other intimidation tactics along the way. It s quite another to negotiate through the current morass of complicated social, religious, economic and geo-political problems around the world.
Trump has no global view. He just peers into a mirror, reflecting his own outsized ego. He maintains that he will make America great again. Funny, last time I looked the United States was great. Mistakes have been made, of course, and even the most enthusiastic fans of President Obama must admit his Syrian strategy has been timid and inconsistent, but are we prepared to hand over the job of CEO of the world s strongest country to a man who persuades via chest-thumping?
