Cherokee Trail isn’t the only Class 5A team in high gear at the appropriate time.
Cherry Creek, a longtime rival in the Centennial League, also is playing its best baseball of the season.
On Friday at Bishop Machebeuf, the Bruins opened the big-school Championship Series with a 5-3 decision over Continental’s ThunderRidge, then handled Centennial rival Grandview 6-1 to advance to Saturday’s biggest game, the 3 p.m. matchup against Cherokee Trail. That winner will assure itself of heading into the final weekend undefeated in the double-elimination format as well as a berth into the title game.
Against Grandview, the Bruins moved to 17-6 behind the pitching of Javis Steward, who went into the seventh inning and struck out 10 Wolves. At the plate, Tanner O’Tremba ripped a home run and had a two-run single.
