A Weld County jury on Friday convicted a 31-year-old man of shooting at an Evans police officer, a man and a woman last year.
Hugo Garza was found guilty of several charges, including attempted first-degree murder of a police officer, attempted manslaughter, disorderly conduct and reckless endangerment, according to prosecutors.
Authorities say , Garza was involved in a fight with a female friend who was standing near his vehicle when he retrieved a handgun and fired a shot through the roof of the Ford Ranger pickup truck.
He then fired at the woman, and as she ran away unloaded a barrage of bullets at a man in the area who was trying to come to her assistance, according to a news release from the county district attorney’s office.
“Several minutes later, Garza fired at Sgt. Pete Bratton of the Evans Police Department as he responded to the area,” the release said. “Garza’s shots narrowly missed each of the three victims.”
Garza was eventually arrested by SWAT officers.
Garza is slated to be sentenced on June 16 and faces up to 108 years in prison.
