A driver died Sunday in a single-vehicle crash on a Western Slope highway, but a child in the vehicle survived.

The fatal crash happened about 9:30 p.m. on U.S. 40 just east of Hayden, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

Christine Carlberg, 28, of Hayden, was driving west in a 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer when the SUV ran off the road and rolled several times, the state patrol said in a news release.

Carlberg, who was not buckled in, died at the scene. A 4-year-old child who was restrained in a car seat suffered minor injuries.

The child was taken to Yampa Valley Medical Center, treated and released.

The cause of the crash is under investigation. Not using a seat belt was a contributing factor in Carlberg’s death, the release said.
