
The iconic Independence Pass near Aspen is scheduled to reopen this week.
The Colorado Department of Transportation says its crews have been working to clear the route over Colorado 82 for an on-target opening at noon Thursday.
Officials say necessary work to get the popular road back into shape includes clearing avalanche slide paths, trimming trees and brush, patching potholes and striping the highway.
The high-mountain pass between Aspen and Twin Lakes connects Pitkin and Lake counties.
The pass reaches above 12,000 feet and typically opens near Memorial Day each year. The route usually closes in the first week of November, when snowfall makes the narrow route impassable.
Another popular passage, Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park, is , weather permitting.
Guanella Pass, between Georgetown and Grant, is also set to reopen on Friday.
