Traffic on the E-470 tollroad at the intersection with Smoky Hill Road in Aurora.

Another legislative session has passed without a solution to Colorado’s transportation funding deficit. As roads and bridges deteriorate under our rapidly growing population, the only funding plan in sight is toll roads that add lanes to existing roads we’ve already paid for — and still pay for — through gas taxes.

I, for one, have seen no improvement in travel times on interstates, and toll money does nothing for “free” lanes that badly need attention. Free general-purpose lanes are a more efficient use of resources than HOV/express/toll lanes that rely on congestion to make money. Stop and think about that.

State policymakers, avoid more toll roads. Everyone benefits from the highway system, even non-drivers, by having goods and materials available in our landlocked state. Find solutions that serve your constituents’ best interests, not your donations from tolling companies.
