Severe thunderstorms hit areas north and south of Denver on Monday afternoon, with hail, strong winds, lightning strikes and torrential rains. Golf-ball-size hail was reported in Highlands Ranch.

The rains could cause flash-flooding in some areas, according to the National Weather Service.

Estes Park was hit by heavy hail Monday afternoon, as were parts of Douglas County.

The weather service posted a severe thunderstorm warning for northeastern Douglas County that ended at 4:30 p.m.

A storm, moving northeast at 10 mph, hit the Louviers area, about 17 miles south of Denver, at about 4:05 p.m. with “half-dollar-size” hail, the weather service reported.

That storm damaged vehicles and other property.

Mostly cloudy skies brought scattered showers and thunderstorms to Denver on Monday as the high temperature climbed into the mid-80s.

Elsewhere in northeastern Colorado scattered showers were expected to develop over the mountains and spread onto the plains.

Brief heavy rains are expected, with winds up to 40 mph. The storms could unleash lightning and hail in some areas.

Stronger storms, with winds up to 60 mph hit areas south of Interstate 70.

Turbulent weather in northeastern Colorado is expected into the night.
