Re: “,” June 5 letter to the editor.

I appreciate the value of differing opinions in a public debate. However, those opinions must be backed by reasonable facts. I find it appalling that The Post ran Susan Permutap letter, which was riddled with error. First, Monsanto does not make neonicotinoids; Syngenta and Bayer do. Secondly, neonicotinoids have nothing to do with GMOs; they are applied to conventional seeds as well. Thirdly, Roundup is glyphosate, a weed control chemical, not a neonicotinoid. Fourthly, Roundup is one of the most rapidly biodegraded compounds used in agriculture, gone in weeks. Permutap anecdote from her 1970s gardening experience is not convincing in opposition to the most comprehensive review of GMO data in history, conducted by an international panel of highly trained, distinguished scientists. This letter only serves to bolster old wives’ tales and folklore. The Post normally stands on the side of facts, not feelings. I’m disappointed.
