Pilot, a 2-year-old Labrador retriever, will be providing comfort to crime victims in Douglas County.

On Tuesday, Sheriff Tony Spurlock administered an oath of office to the K9, the first victim’s assistance dog to work for the Sheriff’s Office, according to Lauren Lekander, Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman.

“His handler is the victim’s advocate. His purpose is to respond to calls with her and be there for comfort,”  Lekander said.

Comfort dogs are trained from the time they are puppies, she said.

Pilot has done some preliminary work with his handler over the past few weeks, Lekander said.

“He is the very first working dog for the victim’s advocate.”
