An Arapahoe County jury on Wednesday convicted a man of first-degree murder in a 2011 shooting that left a Sudanese war refugee dead.
Devon Grant-Washington, 23, was immediately sentenced to life in prison plus an additional 102 years, according to a news release from the Arapahoe County district attorney’s office.
Grant-Washington was one of five men associated with the Crips gang who was in July 2014.
On Dec. 26, 2011, Grant-Washington and the others were searching for a rival gang member as part of an ongoing feud.
Youn Malual, 43, had returned home from his job as an RTD bus mechanic and parked outside of his apartment building. The group mistakenly identified Malual as the rival gang member and shot him twice at close range.
Grant-Washington then fired five shots into the apartment of the rival gang member before all five men fled the scene.
Malual’s wife found her husband slumped over in the driver’s seat of his gold Nissan Pathfinder. Malual had five children.
