Federal Boulevard was reduced to one lane Friday in each direction between 67th and 70th avenues and will remain that way for five months.

The lane reduction will help speed the replacement of a structurally deficient and functionally obsolete bridge on Federal Boulevard at 69th Avenue, over the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad and the Regional Transportation District Northwest Rail Line.

Speed will be reduced to 30 mph within this quarter-mile stretch, say officials with the Colorado Department of Transportation.

“We understand the impact this work will have on residents and businesses along this busy corridor,” said Paul Jesaitis, Region 1 transportation director. “Our goal is to substantially complete the new bridge by the end of November and this lane reduction allows us to hit that milestone. Otherwise, construction would be required to extend for an additional year.”

Northbound Federal Boulevard travelers should take 64th Avenue east to Pecos Street, north on Pecos Street, and west on 72nd Avenue to return to Federal Boulevard, CDOT advises. Southbound Federal Boulevard travelers should reverse that same route.

Crews will also reconstruct a one-half mile  between 67th and 70th avenues and adding retaining walls at the bridge approaches.
