Re: “,” June 16 letter to the editor.
First of all, to letter-writer Daniel Barber, who was awarded the Purple Heart and the Army Commendation Medal for valor in Vietnam, thank you for your service, and welcome home. As for Muhammad Ali, he had the right to decide if he wanted to serve or not. As far as I am concerned, he was a draft dodger and whatever price he paid was very small compared to our comrades whose names are engraved on a wall in Washington, D.C. Whether the Vietnam War was just or not has no bearing on his refusal to serve. There is no way on God’s green earth that our country’s flag should have been lowered to half-staff for Ali — what a slap in the face to those who gave their all.
