Re: “,” June 5 My Turn column.
Toward the end of his My Turn column, real estate developer Steve Schuck asks, “If public charter schools generate better results at lower costs than do traditional public schools, then why not charterize more, if not all, of them?” The answer lies in the fact that his introductory premise is wrong.
I’ll just quote someone who actually knows about education: “Most studies consistently conclude that on average the academic results of charters are no better than those of traditional public schools serving the same sorts of students. Nor have charter schools produced cost savings.” This is from the book “Reign of Error” by Diane Ravitch, a research professor of education at New York University.
So the answer to Schuck’s question is that none of them should be “charterized.”
