Aurora police are investigating a crash involving a 15-year-old driver whose vehicle went airborne and broadsided another vehicle overnight.

The incident started at 12:44 a.m. Saturday when an officer checking speed on Interstate 225 noticed a Dodge Charger recorded driving at about 80 mph, .

When police tried to stop the car, the driver sped up and tried to get away, weaving around traffic.

“The officer discontinued trying to stop the vehicle as the Dodge was driving recklessly,” the news release states.

The car exited the highway at East Mississippi Avenue, and was not able to stop at the intersection, sending the car airborne as it hit the center median, and then broadsided a Jeep Liberty driven by a 29-year-old woman.

The woman had to be extricated from the vehicle and was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. She is currently in critical condition.

“We do not believe alcohol or drug impairment were involved with this crash,” police state in the release. “Contributing factors of this crash were speed and driver inexperience, as the (15-year-old) male juvenile did not have any kind of driver’s license or permit to be driving a motor vehicle.”

Police are waiting to complete the investigation before deciding if any charges will be filed.
