Arvada police are searching for a man wanted in an apparently random stabbing and home invasion early Sunday of a 78-year-old woman.

Officers found the woman bleeding from a wound to her chest at about 5 a.m. Sunday in the 6500 block of Kline Street. She was seriously injured but is in stable condition at an area hospital, investigators say.

Jill McGranahan, a police spokeswoman, said the stabbing happened as the woman opened her front door.

“She opened the door thinking it was a paperboy,” she said.

The woman walked to a neighbor’s house for help, at which point officers were called.

A male suspect is described being about 5-foot-10 and thin. Police say he is about 30 years old and has brown hair trimmed down to a buzz cut and facial stubble.

Police say they do not know what motivated the stabbing.

“We have some leads that we are following,” McGranahan said. “We do not believe the suspect and victim were known to each other. It’s pretty disconcerting, so we are trying to figure out why he did this.”

Arvada police are asking anyone who may have seen something in the area of the stabbing to call Detective B. Westbrook at 720-898-6900.

“Even if (you) think it was nothing, it could be the key to finding this person,” McGranahan said.
