MidAmerican Energy, a Berkshire Hathaway Energy subsidiary, expects to buy up to 1,000 Vestas Wind Systems turbines for its Wind XI project in Iowa. The 2,000-megawatt project still must be approved by the Iowa Utilities Board.

The conditional agreement includes a five-year service agreement and a promise to provide all of the components needed to ensure MidAmerican gets 100 percent of the available federal production tax credits for 2016.

Vestas, which is headquartered in Denmark, has manufacturing plants in Brighton, Windsor and Pueblo. MidAmerican is the largest regulated utility owner of wind energy in the U.S. With the addition of Wind XI, the Des Moines, Iowa-based utility will generate 85 percent of its retail power from wind, Vestas said in a news release.
