Re: “,” June 26 letter to the editor.

With all due respect to Dr. Thomas J. Perille’s suggestion and implied criticism that physician-assisted suicide increases suicide rates, that is precisely the objective. People who are suffering from incurable and unbearable conditions now have the option of ending their lives, an option they previously did not have absent a willingness to use a gun, attempt an overdose, or utilize some other chancy method. Physician-assisted suicide does not romanticize suicide, but does make it available to people who otherwise are condemned to unspeakable suffering.
