Re: “,” June 25 editorial.

I disagree with the statement in your editorial that “Board members are free to talk to students.” As a former principal in the Douglas County School District, I never had a board member ask to talk with a student directly. The Board of Education only has authority when it meets together in a meeting; board members have no more rights than any other citizen outside of those meetings. No citizen has the right to walk into a school and talk directly with any student, and no administrator should permit that. If the board (as a group, in a meeting) has a concern with a proposed activity, their approach is to direct the administration to investigate, resolve it as best they can, and report back. Board members Meghann Silverthorn and Judith Reynolds were wrong to have any direct contact with Grace Davis and deserve the criticism they are receiving.

Re: “,” June 27 letters to the editor.

As 40-year resident of Douglas County without a student at Dougco schools, I still take a lot of pride in the accomplishments of our kids. A lot of great kids have rung my doorbell on Halloween and some of these same kids went on to take themselves and their schools to mational prominence in many areas. Letter-writer Russell W. Haas of Golden blasted Dougco residents who objected to the bullying tactics of two board members, Judith Reynolds and Meghann Silverthorn, against a 15-year-old female student. Had these board members been men, some Dougco dad, granddad or great granddad would have punched their lights out and a lot of volunteers would have held his coat.
