The 26-year-old man killed in an all-terrain vehicle crash Sunday in El Paso County was a decorated Army sergeant stationed at nearby Fort Carson, officials said Tuesday.

Miguel Diaz died after an accident about 2:15 p.m. Sunday at an off-road area near the intersection of Mesa Ridge Parkway and Autumn Glen Avenue.

According to military records, Diaz was originally from New York City and had served in the Army for more than seven years, including a tour in Afghanistan. He was stationed at Fort Carson in December 2014 and assigned to the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team of the 4th Infantry Division.

“It is always hard to lose a part of our military family,” the Mountain Post said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Sgt. Miguel Diaz’s family and friends during this very difficult time.”

El Paso County authorities say Diaz’s cause and manner of death are pending completion of a toxicology analysis.
