A town worker was injured Sunday night when a mishap at the Fairplay fireworks show led to the sudden explosion of about 100 mortars, officials say.

Leaders in the Park County town said the incident happened when a firework prematurely exploded about 10 feet off the ground and ignited the mortars. A worker was rushed to Summit Medical Center in Frisco where that person was treated and released.

The mishap led authorities to cut the show short.

Tina Darrah, the town’s administrator, said the incident is under investigation. She said the show cost about $5,000 and has been running for at least a decade.

“They didn’t all go off, so we have some of those fireworks remaining that will be shot off at a different time,” she said Tuesday.

A planned fireworks show for Fairplay’s Burro Days event is still scheduled to go on.

Nine people were injured last year during a mishap . One man afterward indicated the town.
